Exciting New Tour Added to Fall Hikes!

Dana Hike Nov. 15, 2015

This exciting new hike is a test run on a late addition to the Nordic Club hiking schedule and takes place in the Dana area about a 45 min. drive east of Saskatoon. The topography is a southward extension of the Minichinas Hills NW of Wakaw. It is characterized by scenic rolling hills and hollows punctuated by small ponds & sloughs that are mostly overflowing with groundwater inflows. The trail winds through aspen forest & small bluffs that are interspersed with open hillsides having overviews of the surrounding landscape.

Most of the hike is easy going on established trails except where they have been re-routed around overflowing ponds, requiring a bit of bushwhacking to skirt wet spots. There are a few large hills but the assent is gradual & easy going. I’m estimating the distance to be 12-13 km. A few short sections have been “cultivated” over the years by pocket gophers making rough ground underfoot. Sturdy footwear with ankle support is advisable.

Three quarters of the route is on designated wildlife land open to hunting. The remainder is privately owned. It is hunting season, so wearing brightly colored clothing, particularly an orange or red hat/toque (never white) is recommended.

Overall, the hike presents great scenic variety in terrain and landscape, and a couple of interesting cultural features along the route. Wildlife is abundant – I encountered a pair of bull moose on the trail while engaged in the final scouting last week! Photographic potential is also abundant. I’m expecting this hike to be the grand finale to the fall hiking season!

See Adult > Hiking & Ski Touring menu item for more general info on hiking.
Note: Meeting place 9:45 am to register & carpool is at the Field House NE (paved) parking lot south of the Preston Ave & College Dr. intersection. There is no community fall supper following the hike.
